From Toy to App: The Rise of Wakppu
From Toy to App: The Rise of Wakppu0Have you ever heard of wakppu? The name combines the Koreanized pronunciation of “wax” with the Korean word “ppushigi,” meaning “smashing” or “breaking.” It is a palm-sized ball with a thin wax shell that hides soft, slimy clay inside. Crushing it creates a satisfying crackling sound and texture, making it a popular ASMR content. The tactile sensory trend has taken South Korea by storm lately, attracting everyone from children to office workers.

Wakppu has even made its way into the digital world. A mobile app that recreates the crunchy-squishy experience recently topped Apple’s App Store rankings. The app employs realistic graphics, crisp ASMR sound effects, and haptic vibrations to imitate the feeling of breaking real wax, all while being more accessible and cleaner than the physical toy.

Many young people are obsessed with the virtual version. “I can crush wax during school breaks without making a mess,” one middle school student said. Users can choose different wax colors and thicknesses and unlock new virtual balls through daily check-ins.

Experts say the app’s popularity reflects growing demand for quick, simple ways to relieve stress. Instead of playing competitive games, many Gen Z users are turning to relaxing sensory apps to help them unwind in just a few minutes. Sometimes, a simple digital crunch is all it takes to brighten a stressful day.
