Rare T. Rex Fossil 멒us� Sells at Auction, Sparking Debate
A Tyrannosaurus rex fossil has become the latest point of contention in the scientific community after selling at Sotheby뭩 for a record-shattering $50.1 million following an intense 10-minute bidding contest. The winning bidder, who participated by phone, chose to remain anonymous.
Nicknamed Gus, the fossil measures roughly 11.6 meters long and is one of the largest and most complete T. rex skeletons ever discovered. About 61% of the skeleton is intact, including an exceptionally preserved skull, nearly all of its ribs, and the rare wishbone, or furcula. The fossil was unearthed on a South Dakota ranch in 2021 and named after the late landowner, Gary 밎us� Licking.
The record-breaking sale has disappointed many paleontologists who had hoped the fossil would end up in a museum. They argue that scientifically important fossils should remain in public institutions where they can be studied by researchers and viewed by future generations.
밢ur hope is that the new owner recognizes the extraordinary scientific and educational value of Gus,� said Kristi Curry Rogers, president-elect of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, urging the buyer to donate the fossil to an accredited natural history museum.
